Andrew Bird's "Noble Beast" pushed up!

Surf City - Surf City [EP]
THE VERDICT - 10 out of 10 I am a terrible, terrible dancer. Two left feet. As Isaac Brock said "Henry, you dance like a wooden Indian". Try as I might I don't think I'll ever improve. But I can live with that.
All that being said I just had a dance marathon by myself listening to an insane debut EP by these amazing New Zealand youngsters, Surf City. They sound nearly like a lost British Invasion cult act, but with better production and a very keen eye for melody.
One thing I love about this band is that they wear their influences on their sleeve proudly, Pavement, Animal Collective, the Clean and the Chills, all among the bands' targets. Some critics would say this EP is derivative drivel, hero worship, etc. and on and on. But by publicly citing the bands that have inspired their sound, what they're really trying to relate is that of a master painter revealing what set of colors he would use for his new masterpiece, not his brushstrokes. Which is to say that by revealing the borders and edges of the sound Surf City were shooting for they themselves know that they can create their own countries and worlds inside those borders.
And they do. If it feels like you've heard these songs before you have. They sound like some wonderful secret you had forgot. Like finding $50 in an old winter coat. These are songs filled with the joy of being alive and God help you if they don't bring a smile to your face. alt="" align="left" border="0">
'Death of Anna Karina' hatching LP numero 3

Sadly one of the best hardcore bands out there today is nearly non-existent to the eyes and ears of American music enthusiasts. They go by the name of The Death of Anna Karina, they hail from Italy, and they will rip out your soul. Hardcore at its finest. I can safely place these guys alongside bands like JR Ewing and Songs of Zarathustra - bands that are not afraid to follow the experimental ways of the genre first brought to listeners by the Refused record The Shape of Punk to Come.
The Death of Anna Karina has been keeping it quiet these last few years since the release of their second album New Liberalistic Pleasures, but are now prepping their third record. The band is currently exploring a new direction for their third endeavor and plan to hopefully unleash the record sometime next year on Unhip Records bearing the tentative title lacrima/pantera.
Hear a listen or at least a have bit of a taste of The Death of Anna Karina right here.
